Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has been used historically for its many healing properties.  It has been used to ward of scurvy, as a deodorant, as a disinfectant and there are claims that it can help with weight loss, heart health and controlling blood sugar.  In this recipe, it’s particularly useful, as bacteria and viruses are unable to live in an acidic environment, so in addition to soothing your cough, it aids in fighting the infection as well.

Manuka Honey

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand Manuka trees, or Leptospermum scoparium.  Like many other honeys, it has anti-bacterial activity from the amounts of hydrogen peroxide present, however hydrogren peroxide can be broken down by the enzyme catalase, which is present in our saliva, blood, tissues, as well as by heat and light.  On the other hand, researchers have found that unlike other honeys, Manuka honey still maintains its anti-bacterial activity even when the hydrogen peroxide is completely destroyed.  How is this possible?  Manuka honey has non-peroxide anti-bacterial activity, in that during testing its efficacy against bacteria was not diminished even with all of its hydrogen peroxide eliminated and it has often been shown to be twice as effective against certain pathogens as regular honey.

  1. Nice recipe Miss Cleo! I love apple cider vinegar and I love Manuka Honey. I had not thought to put them together. I am going to go for this next time someone is sick in my family.

    1. Any natural health food store should have it and I’ve even seen it at some regular grocery stores. Just make sure it has a UMF rating (which measures the amount of non-peroxide activity) of at least +10, preferably higher.

  2. This is pure genius! I have both of these ingredients and will be using them together when needed (hopefully not soon though).

    1. Ah yes, keep healthy! Which you should do with all the good food you make. But the odd time a sickness crops up, this is a good weapon to have in your arsenal!

  3. Lovely! In our version, we add some ginger as well. In yet another and more popular avatar, we get ginger, honey, cinnamon, turmeric and milk…all heated up. Cures cold, inflammation, and many other things!
