Kale Green Apple Romaine Smoothie

Since I’m out of the kitchen for a few days, taking care of a family health issue, I thought I would share another smoothie from Sprouting Zen’s Mindful Juicing Party. This time I decided to focus on the colour green.  How many green items could I incorporate and still have the smoothie taste delicious?  Green is normally a colour that denotes health but not necessarily sweetness.  Could I do it?

Well, I’m happy to say that I think I came up with a winner!  Kale, Romaine lettuce, a Granny Smith apple, lime juice, and matcha powder …….. add a banana and some dates and it’s hard to go wrong.

I’ve made the Matcha tea optional, but add it if you can, as provides excellent health benefits:

  • antioxidants
  • boosts metabolism
  • detoxifies
  • rich in chlorophyll
  • vitamins and minerals including selenium, chromium, zinc, magnesium and Vitamin C

I threw everything into the blender to get all the nutrition and fibre but If you’re particular about fibre in your smoothies, you could do the following:

  • juice the kale, romaine and apple
  • add the juice to the rest of the ingredients (except the water) and blend
  • add water as necessary for desired consistency

However, I encourage you to try it “au naturale“, as fibre is part of a healthy balanced diet.  And if you’re using the smoothie for a meal-replacement, such as breakfast, the fibre will make you feel fuller much longer.

  1. I really love your photography, you make healthy eating look so good! I am a big fan of kale too. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

    1. Thanks so much for the compliment, Tina! It’s so appreciated, especially since photography was the most dreaded part of food blogging when I started, but now I’m enjoying it sooo much! I have more kale recipes coming up, so please stay tuned! 🙂

    1. I’ve read that the capsule form of turmeric is an extract and doesn’t work in the same way as the spice, but I’ve also been told otherwise so who knows? As for the Red Tea Detox, I browsed around the internet for a bit and these is as much literature against it as for it. I couldn’t find the actual ingredient in it …. is it Rooibos by any chance? In any case, for detox I would usually opt for watercress, dandelion (in tea in root form, and also leaves in salads), burdock root, stinging nettle and some other foods which I can’t think of at the moment. I’d also lighten up on my eating for a week, eating more plant-based and drinking lots of teas like matcha and barley water. There is so much information out there and what works for one person might not work for another. It’s often trying things and if they work great, but also staying safe at the same time. Best of luck!
